Petition for Dr. Binayak Sen's Release Print E-mail
( 3 Votes )
Written by Benjamin Jakobus

Dr. B. SenDr Binayak Sen, a 56 year old Indian paediatrician known for his commitments to human rights and health care to the poor was arrested on the 14th of May 2007. He lived and worked in Chhattisgarh, one of India's most deprived states. In his role as the national vice president of People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) he was engaged in highlighting human right violations in Chhattisgarh. He was arrested and accused for ties with the Naxalites, a revolutionary communist group that is ideologically close to Maoism (for further details see Dr. Nordlander's article Dr Binayak Sen, a jailed Human Rights Defender).

HumanRightsDefence condemns  Dr. Binayak Sen's arrest as unlawful. If you would like to petition for a fair legal process, please sign and send the following letter on behalf of HumanRightsDefence to your nearest Indian Consulate or Embassy. For a list of addresses, please see below.

On behalf of HumanRightsDefence, I kindly request to his Excellency the Ambassador of India to voice our petition to the President of India; our petition concerns Dr Binayak Sen, who according to my consideration has been unlawfully imprisoned.I understand that the treatment Dr Binayak Sen received is one of a man already condemned, of belonging to a rebel group called Naxalite. Here, the principle of presumption of innocence has been violated. Each day he continues under arrest is one day more of flagrance violation of his freedom and dignity as a human being. We know and it is vox populi that Dr, Sen is a man that works as humanitarian activist. Until now he only can be accused of his use of professional medic skills on the poor people of his community.
How this kind of violation of human rights can happen in a democratic country like India which is part of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights is very surprising.

I don’t pretend to judge the justice system in India; however, Dr Binayak Sen case does not contribute to strength and confidence of fair legal processes in India.

We demand justice for a good man and a good citizen of your country.

Respectfully,
