Freedom for Aung San Suu Kyi! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Luisa Teresa Salazar de Nordlander
Wednesday, 18 June 2008 18:09

Aung San Suu Kyi's 63rd birthday was the 19th of June. Nothing has changed since her last birthday, she continues living under house arrest in Burma, the country where she was born in.

She is a woman of peace inspired by the non-violent leaders such as Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi. Her crime has been to voice her belief for a peaceful transition of regime, from the military dictatorship to democracy. For Aung San Suu Kyi, the 19th of June is one more day under house arrest, one more year of her life without seeing a change toward democracy, and one year more where the voice of their people is not respected in her country.

Her father General Aung San—the national hero—fought long for the Burma’s independence against Great Britain in the 1940s. Her father was assassinated 1947, half a year before he could see the liberation of Burma.

Malicious Web attack disables HumanRightsDefence PDF Print E-mail

HRD hackedOn the night between the 12th and 13th of August 2008, we experienced an attack on our website that rendered it inaccessible for several hours. Latest reports indicated that the attack originated in Spain. Authorities will be contacted shortly.

Why somebody would target a Human Rights Group is beyond us. HumanRightsDefence has reason believe that the attack was not a targetted one, but instead was a wide spread, malicious attack that exploited a newly discovered vulnurability in our widely used Content Management System, targetting all websites that failed to install a security patch in time. We apologize for the inconveniences caused by the website attack and our subsequent downtime. We hope you will continue to support our efforts and visit us often.

The New Venezuelan Constitution and the Reconfiguration of Relations Between the State and Indigenou PDF Print E-mail

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has a total population of: 22,803,409 people (1998) and the indigenous population represents 1.5% of this figure [1] This statistic means that the 32 indigenous communities that exist in Venezuela are also a numerical minority [2] and therefore, twice as vulnerable.

The contemporary history of the relations between the Venezuelan State and the indigenous people was briefly described by the General Office of Indigenous Matters of the Educational, Culture and Sports Ministry of Venezuela [3] as “unaware of the indigenous people’s history, full of assimilation and integration policies from the State perspective and non recognition of the existence of another culture within the country"[4].

The UK reservation to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: the passage for Detention of asylum seeking children PDF Print E-mail
Written by Marianela Gamboa de Clayton

The UN Convention on the rights of the child 1989 is the most widely ratified convention except for the USA and Somalia. It states some basic principles such as the best interest of the child and the protection against discrimination.

This instrument makes a potentially powerful protection for the refugee child and even the child whose asylum claim has been rejected. However the power of that protection is diluted in the UK context because of the UK reservation to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, 1989. The UK does not agree to follow article 22 and 9 of the Convention and retains the right to apply its own National Immigration legislation. This would not be a concern if national law protected children more than the convention but this is not the case in the UK, on the contrary the reservation has severely limited children’s rights particularly for asylum seeking children.
